Now, in the US I would never contemplate a hot dog for breakfast. It just sounds strange! But in Bulgaria, it's normal. In fact, I didn't think it was strange until I was half-way through my breakfast!
I think many Bulgarian's do breakfast on the go (in a country where you can say I'm running late in one word!). There are many stands with pastry-like breakfast food: banitsa, bread and cheese, even sandwiches and hot dogs! I usually like either banitsa or bread & cheese (the cheese is baked into the bread. YUM!) This morning I stopped at a stand under the highway (While a highway cuts through Sofia, there are often tunnels for foot traffic. These tunnels are filled with shops and food stands.) and ordered a bready-cheesy breakfast. But when I had climbed the stairs and continued on my walk to class I discovered that I did not have what I ordered! I had a hot dog for breakfast.
