Bulgarian's are known for their hospitality and I can attest to that! I ate so much food, and Mari's mom kept asking me if I didn't want a little bit more. It was wonderful to be spoiled like that and the food was excellent. I even got to take a couple 2-hour naps, which were much needed!
On Saturday, we went to dye eggs with Mari's Baba (grandmother). Before we stared dying eggs, she sent us to see some of the horse show that was happening on the outskirts of the village. Watching the horses reminded me of my middle school craze over horses and all the useless horse knowledge I have in my brain! :) Dying eggs was amazing. We used these wooden tools and wax to draw on the eggs, then dyed them, added another layer of wax, dyed them again, and then melted the wax off of the egg to reveal patterns in different colors!
Before we left Kozloduy, we visited both Mari's grandfather and then her grandmother to crack eggs. It's a tradition to each hold and egg and hit the other person's egg to see who has the strongest egg. It's a fun tradition.
The last thing we did was stop at a cave on the way back to Sofia. It was really cold this weekend, and started raining, but the cave was interesting. I even understood some of what the guide was telling us about the rock formations! I'm sure my Bulgarian improved this weekend, but more importantly, I was able to develop some close friendship with Mari, her boyfriend and her sister.
