” 'Oh, nice shoes! I want such shoes!' You say this when you want to complement your friend's new purchase." My teacher explained to me. I was thinking that was an interesting way to give a complement, but hey, this is a new culture for me! I've noticed that there's a lot I don't know, even though I've been in Bulgaria for two years. Soon enough I had an opportunity to put this phrase into practice. I received this picture from a friend when she told me about her new backpack: So, of course, I sent my friend a message telling her what a nice backpack she found! Indeed, I'd like such a backpack, merely thinking that I was sending her a more enthusiastic compliment. She responded with this picture and exactly where to buy it & how much it cost! Turns out this is more common in conversation following the normal compliment of "Oh! What a nice bag!" In writing and without the primer complement, this phrase is far stronger! |
